LAEI launches an international scientific project “SHERPA - Sustainable Hub to Engage into Rural Policies with Actors” under HORIZON 2020 - RUR-2018-2020 Rural Renaissanc.

Lithuanian Institute of Agrarian Economics takes part in international scientific project “SHERPA - Sustainable Hub to Engage into Rural Policies with Actors”, implemented under HORIZON 2020 - RUR-2018-2020 Rural Renaissance programme, Grant agreement no. 862448.

With 21 EU Member states covered by consortium partners (Belgium, France, Greece, Sweden, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, UK, Germany, Slovenia, Portugal and other) SHERPA ensures a wide geographical coverage of Europe. Networks such as ERDN and Nordregio provide mechanisms to engage with expertise in other EU Member States not explicitly covered by the consortium.

The overall objective of SHERPA is to gather relevant knowledge and opinions that contribute to the formulation of recommendations for future policies relevant to EU rural areas. It will create a science–society–policy interface which provides a hub for knowledge and policy. This will support actors in rural development, including in coastal communities, to help rural areas take emerging opportunities and protect them from long-term threats of decline.

SHERPA will contribute to policy development in three main areas:

     1) Provision of inputs for the design of future research policies, with a focus on the preparation of work programmes under Horizon Europe;

     2) Support for implementation of policies relevant to rural areas in the programming period 2021–2027 and

     3) Support for setting the direction of rural policy in the next programming period (after 2027).

Seven Work Packages (WPs) are planned to implement focusing the five specific objectives: 1) to map the main drivers of future trends and dynamics of EU rural areas; 2) to establish Multi-Actor Platforms as effective and sustainable Science-Society-Policy interfaces; 3) to create a shared knowledge base relevant to EU rural policy by taking stock of results of past and on-going research projects; 4) to engage in dialogue between citizens, researchers and policy makers from EU territories and 5) to formulate recommendations linked, if needed, with different scenarios for the development of modern rural policies at European, national and regional levels.

SHERPA project comprehensively addresses the full scope of the H2020 Coordination and Support Action for the topic “RUR-01-2018-2019 - D Rural society-science-policy hub”.

Total project budget is 5 million Eur. Project duration: 4 years.

More detailed information is soon to be available online.
